Each year, the Buffalo/Western New York chapter of the American Institute of Architects presents awards to honor excellence in architectural design. We are proud to announce that Pentagram partner Lorenzo Apicella’s design for the One M&T Plaza Entrance Pavilion has received one of three Honor Awards in the 2014 AIA Buffalo/WNY Design Awards program.

The jury notes, “This is a perfect minimal respectful addition. The entrance pavilion was a meticulously detailed design that appropriately utilized a high-quality selection of materials. This thoughtful design is exactly what we would expect to to see in this high quality urban setting.”

The new entrance pavilion is located at the M&T Bank headquarters in downtown Buffalo, a 21-storey building designed in 1967 by iconic architect Minoru Yamasaki.  A rectangular vestibule serves as a new entrance to the main banking building, and features a large, conical skylight that reveals the building’s distinctive arched window.  The glass and metal construction echoes and reinforces Yamasaki’s original design, reminding visitors that they are entering a landmark of mid-century modern architecture.
